Application
Application Steps
- Positioning: Position the Sika Waterbar® O VN centrally within the construction or expansion joint, ensuring the centre bulb or ribs are correctly aligned with the joint plane.
- Fixing: Secure the waterstop in position using wire ties or clips to the reinforcement to prevent displacement during concrete pouring.
- Concrete Placement: Pour and compact concrete carefully on both sides of the waterstop. Ensure full encapsulation without voids or honeycombing around the waterstop profile.
- Site Welding: Where joints or connections are required, weld sections together using a welding knife. Ensure clean, even welds for a watertight connection.
- Inspection: After concrete has hardened, inspect the joint area to confirm the waterstop is correctly embedded and no voids are present.

Application
Application Steps
- Fixing to Formwork: Fit the V-profile Sika Waterbar® V VN into the split formwork or shuttering for casting centrally into the stop-ends. Used for construction and movement joints where nominal movement is anticipated.
- Fixing to Reinforcement: Use pre-punched eyelets in the outer flanges to fix the waterbar to steel reinforcement with tie wires, ensuring it is not displaced during concreting.
- Placing Concrete – First Stage: Both sides must be well embedded in concrete. Vibrate carefully to avoid honeycombing. Use well-graded aggregate with concrete that is neither too plastic nor too stiff. Apply equal concrete pressure on both sides to prevent the ends from folding up.
- Placing Concrete – Second Stage: Remove formwork carefully near the waterbar. Check the stop-end thoroughly for honeycombing and repair if necessary. Clean all hardened concrete remnants from the first stage before proceeding as per the first stage.
- Site Welding: Use a Sika electric welding knife. Heat both ends simultaneously on the faces of the welding knife until an even molten bead of PVC appears. Withdraw the knife and immediately push the sections together. Hold rigid until the PVC cools and solidifies. Check for gaps or imperfect joints and re-weld if necessary.

| Backfilling deadline | Within 7 days after application |
Application Steps
- Substrate Preparation: Apply adhesive mortar SikaShield® W1 onto the water-saturated concrete substrate while still wet. Refer to the SikaShield® W1 PDS for full substrate condition requirements.
- Alignment: Unroll the membrane and align it. Re-roll before application. Lay membranes parallel to avoid coinciding joints. When applying over another bituminous membrane, straddle the overlaps of the previous layer.
- Wet Application: Lay the membrane directly over the wet adhesive mortar. At one end, peel away part of the release liner from the underside. Bond this end to the adhesive and substrate. Continue peeling the liner sideways while bonding the rest of the membrane.
- Rolling: Roll the applied membrane surface with a roller from the centre to the edge to remove air bubbles. Push any excess adhesive towards the opposite direction of the sealed side overlap.
- Overlap Sealing: If ambient temperature is below +10°C, seal membrane overlaps by heating with a gas torch or hot air to ensure proper adhesion and prevent adhesive trapping under the overlap.
- Curing & Backfilling: Allow adhesive mortar to cure for at least 24 hours at +25°C before backfilling. Complete backfilling within 7 days of application.
- Detailing: Use a sharp knife to cut around internal/external corners, upstands, vent pipes, drains, and support metalwork. Refer to the relevant method statement for detailing guidance.
- Footwear: Use flat-profile footwear only – spikes or sharp protrusions may puncture the membrane.

| End Overlap | Min. 150 mm |
Application Steps
- Substrate Preparation: Surface must be uniform, firm, smooth, and free from sharp protrusions, grease, laitance, oil, dust, and loose particles. Must be clean and dry.
- Priming: Apply the appropriate Sika® primer at the required consumption onto the prepared dry surface. Allow the primer to dry completely before membrane installation. Contact Sika Technical Service for primer selection guidance.
