Application Steps

  • Substrate Preparation: Apply adhesive mortar SikaShield® W1 onto the water-saturated concrete substrate while still wet. Refer to the SikaShield® W1 PDS for full substrate condition requirements.
  • Alignment: Unroll the membrane and align it. Re-roll before application. Lay membranes parallel to avoid coinciding joints. When applying over another bituminous membrane, straddle the overlaps of the previous layer.
  • Wet Application: Lay the membrane directly over the wet adhesive mortar. At one end, peel away part of the release liner from the underside. Bond this end to the adhesive and substrate. Continue peeling the liner sideways while bonding the rest of the membrane.
  • Rolling: Roll the applied membrane surface with a roller from the centre to the edge to remove air bubbles. Push any excess adhesive towards the opposite direction of the sealed side overlap.
  • Overlap Sealing: If ambient temperature is below +10°C, seal membrane overlaps by heating with a gas torch or hot air to ensure proper adhesion and prevent adhesive trapping under the overlap.
  • Curing & Backfilling: Allow adhesive mortar to cure for at least 24 hours at +25°C before backfilling. Complete backfilling within 7 days of application.
  • Detailing: Use a sharp knife to cut around internal/external corners, upstands, vent pipes, drains, and support metalwork. Refer to the relevant method statement for detailing guidance.
  • Footwear: Use flat-profile footwear only – spikes or sharp protrusions may puncture the membrane.
